My mission is to empower health professionals to adopt weight neutral practice by providing support and training in how and why to do so.  In short, I want to destroy the perception and practice of 'dietitian as food police.'

Thrilled to have achieved the credential of Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian (AdvAPD) and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), I value nourishment, autonomy, authenticity and evidence based practice. My foundation dietetic skillsets are in university lecturing, private practice, and clinical dietetics. My academic research areas are dietetic private practice benchmarking, inter-professional learning and HAES integration into dietetics. A love for research and presenting led me into founding Health Not Diets in 2013 in order to provide professional development training and workshops for HAES integration into clinical practice. I have more than a decade of academic work (unit coordination, lecturing, tutoring, marking, research assisting) under my belt and have been employed by Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Central Queensland University (CQU) and the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) as well as guest lecturing at Griffith University. I also write and review articles for peer-reviewed academic journals and PEN.

After graduating from dietetics, I initially spent three years as a clinical dietitian at The Wesley Hospital, Brisbane, working in a wide range of clinical areas in addition to coordinating and practising in The Wesley Hospital’s dietetic outpatient clinic, Dietitians Wesley.  I built a successful private practice, NutritionSense Allied Health, at Taringa in Brisbane beginning in 2008 and ultimately selling it in 2014 when my family relocated to Central Queensland.  Much of my private practice work was with chronic dieters with whom I frequently used the non-diet approach and am deeply indebted to for motivating me to find a better way to offer support than traditional weight focussed counselling.

When you work at university you are continually hassled to take up a PhD.  After four years of lecturing I was finally ready to begin (!) and commenced research into the clinical application of weight neutral approaches to weight concern in dietetics and it's adoption into practice. I loved the experience of PhD-ing but am very grateful that it's now completed! My PhD research findings have cemented my resolve that weight neutral approaches should be part of every clinician’s skill set and my research continues to inform the professional development workshops and training I provide. My initial literature review for my PhD evolved into two Non-Diet Approach Guidebooks for health professionals (one for Dietitians and one for Psychologists and Counsellors) and in 2016 I developed the Non-Diet Approach Model, which operationalizes the Health at Every Size (R) principals for clinical practice.

Together with my frequent co-facilitator Fiona Sutherland APD (The Mindful Dietitian), I was awarded the 2017 DAA Research Prize for our workshop at the Australia and New Zealand Academy of Eating Disorders (ANZAED) conference. In 2020 I won this award again for an oral presentation reporting some of my PhD findings, and in 2007 I was awarded the Queensland Meals on Wheels Nutrition Award. I was a finalist in the categories of 'Dietitian of the Year', Educator Excellence' and 'Impact Achievement' at the 2019 Allied Health Awards. I served as an elected member of the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) Queensland Branch Executive from 2008-2010, and am a current Board Director of Dietitians Australia (2019-2024). I am a founding member of Size Inclusive Health Australia (formerly HAES Australia Inc) and have held various board roles on this executive over the years including President and Secretary, and currently serve as the Governance Co-Chair. From 2016-2018 I was elected to the position of Vice President International for the Association for Size Diversity and Health (ASDAH). I am also the current administrator for the Society for Australian Independent Dietitian-Nutritionists (AIDNSoc).
